Puno Tours Uros Amantani Taquile 2days: Taquile Tourism began in 1976, at a time when the backpackers began traveling to South America in large numbers. In those early days, especially, “Taquileños” managed the control of the activity on tourism, and have reaped its economic and social benefits. In addition to textils, Taquile became known for its development model based on the community that served as an example for development projects worldwide. However, in the 1980s and 90s, Taquileños slowly began to lose control of tourism for their community. They increasingly is because they are being pushed aside and loosing control in the role of their participants. The trip described above is an example of its development, since most of the tourists today only visit the island for a few hours, where as in the past they stayed for one or more nights, this is what we know as «residential tourism». The islanders are currently engaged in a serious struggle to regain and maintain control of tourism to the island community. Very recently, Taquile may have enter on a new stage in its develop tourism. In late 2005, UNESCO has registered its textile arts as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The question is: Will this designation offer new possibilities for self-control?

Ethnographic data on this article is based on the collected from 1976 when Elayne Zorn traveled to Puno, Taquile to first study the tissue. Since then, she has returned to the island of Taquile regularly to keep track of their progress. In October 2005, Annelou Ypeij joined her on a visit to Taquile. Ypeij has included in her study the tourism in the region.

A model for the development of the community tourism in Puno Taquile Tour:

Taquile as a tourist destination on the tourist route from Cusco in Peru, through Puno and Lake Titicaca in La Paz, capital of Bolivia. The trip then goes further from the south of Sucre, Potosi and Uyuni, near the border with Chile (Ypeij and Zoomers 2006). Tourists traveler do this route in both directions, starting ING in Chile, Bolivia or Peru. The main tourist attraction are Machu Picchu, the famous Inca ruins of the world, near the beautiful Inca city of Cusco is the Inca Trail and (Inca Trail). Both Machu Picchu and Cusco are registered on the UNESCO (list of world heritage sites). This makes them touristic destinations by themselves, and led to the massive nature of tourism in the area of Machu Picchu. Currently, half of a million of tourists visit the area each year and this number is increasing rapidly.

Although Machu Picchu may be the main reason for tourists to come to the region once they are in there, they often want to visit other tourist destinations also. In this light, Puno, at six to eight hours by bus from Cusco, is a popular choice, especially because of the proximity of the islands and Taquile. You could say that Puno and the islands are not tourist destinations in their own rights, but derivatives or secondary destinations. This means that its development may be on the margins of and subordinate to mass tourism in Cusco and Machu Picchu. In general, these derivatives destinations receive less attention from policy makers and investors, and subsequently less money. Given the local control and self-government, as neglect by policy makers and entrepreneurs should not always be considered negative. This neglect may in fact provide opportunities for local people to develop tourism on their own terms.

TOURS DAY 1: TOUR PUNO – UROS FLOATING ISLAND

7:50 AM- Transfer from Puno’s dock for the excursion from the lake to the floating islands, for about 25 min. Boat from the port of Puno; made of reeds, inhabited by the Uros. The Uros live in huts built on platforms of reeds of “totora”, not exceeding 30 to 40 cm. of thickness.

En aquellos primeros días, especialmente, Taquileños logró controlar la actividad del turismo, y han cosechado sus beneficios económicos y sociales. Además de los textiles, Taquile se hizo conocido por su modelo de desarrollo basado en la comunidad que sirvió de ejemplo para proyectos de desarrollo en todo el mundo. 7:50 AM.

Traslado del muelle de Puno para la excursión lacustre a las islas flotantes, queda a 25 min. En Lancha desde el puerto de Puno; hechas de totora, habitadas por los Uros. Los Uros viven en chozas construidas sobre plataformas de totora, que no exceden de 30 a 40 cm. de grosor.

Continuaremos hacia la Isla Amantani en el viaje por lancha podrá apreciar la belleza natural del Lago Sagrado de los Incas donde sus pobladores se caracterizan por conservar su cultura y sus creencias costumbristas y tradicionales; manifestándolas a través de su vestimenta, ritos, religión etc.
