We Recommend Bringing:

  • Small backpack (maximum 20–25 L; required for entry to Machu Picchu).
  • Layered clothing: light T-shirt or shirt, thermal mid-layer, and waterproof/windproof jacket.
  • Comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes with good traction (preferably waterproof for Vinicunca).
  • Sun hat or cap, warm hat/buff for cold early mornings, and UV-protection sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+), lip balm, and insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle (glass containers are not allowed) and energy snacks.
  • Cash in Peruvian soles (for restroom fees, small purchases, and tips; small bills recommended).
    Valid ID or passport and student card if applying for a student fare.
  • Digital or printed copies of reservations, train tickets, and Machu Picchu entrance tickets.
  • Portable charger (power bank) and plug adapter (Peru uses 220V – plug types A/C).
  • Personal medications and a small first-aid kit (bandages, pain relievers, rehydration salts; consult your doctor if you require altitude medication).
  • Camera or cellphone with sufficient storage space for photos.

Important Information:

  • Drones and tripods are not allowed inside Machu Picchu.
  • Trekking poles are only permitted with rubber tips and when medically necessary.
  • Present your tickets in advance at the Machu Picchu entrance control and respect your assigned entry time.
  • For Vinicunca: departure is very early in the morning and temperatures can be cold; bring enough water and walk at a steady pace.
